I am weary and it is only Monday.
Today some of our staff decided to go on strike after an incident last Thursday triggered angry reactions from the staff team.
No drivers worked today. They were on strike. Even the most servant-hearted of our drivers were pressured into refusing requests to drive staff back into the capital Port-au-Prince at the end of the day for fear of being vilified by the rest of the group.
It seemed silly this morning but is clearly an important issue for the staff as a team. Endless meetings and discussions have taken place to try and resolve the issue, and discussions are still ongoing, long after working hours have finished.
The heat has been oppressive today, but the atmosphere in the office even more so. Working in Haiti is always unpredictable, and I always hold my plans for the week loosely, knowing that come Monday morning in the office there will be something new to deal with.
Today is no exception.
